Torrelavega faces potential loss of public bicycle service
The public bicycle service in Torrelavega, known as Torrebici, faces a potential shutdown this autumn due to budgetary constraints. The current contract is set to expire between October and November.
Jezabel Tazón, the Councilor for Mobility and Urbanism, stated that the previous service was supported by European pandemic recovery funds which have now been exhausted. While the City Council has drafted a new contract intended to expand the fleet from 90 to approximately 175 bicycles and introduce anti-vandalism measures like fixed bases and locks, the project is currently stalled.
The new contract requires an annual expenditure of 400,000 euros, an amount the municipal intervention department has indicated the city cannot currently afford. This financial strain is compounded by other major municipal commitments, including the renewal of the Torrebús fleet and a multi-million euro project to bury railway tracks in the city center.
