Torrellano railway bypass approved to connect Alicante airport

Spain’s Ministry of Transport has officially approved the informative study for the Torrellano bypass, a major railway infrastructure project in the Alicante and Elche region. The project involves a new 10.3-kilometer track designed to accommodate both passenger and freight trains.

A primary objective of the bypass is to establish a rail connection to the Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport. Additionally, the new route will allow for the removal of existing tracks along the southern coast of Alicante, specifically through San Gabriel. These tracks have been in place for approximately 150 years and have long been viewed by local residents and associations as a barrier between urban neighborhoods and the beaches.
