Torreón launches program to retire working equines

The city of Torreón has launched the ‘De la Herradura al Motor’ program to retire equines used for heavy labor and replace animal-drawn carts with motorized vehicles. The initiative aims to phase out the use of horses, donkeys, and mules for transporting debris, waste, and furniture in local neighborhoods.

As part of the initial phase, 130 equines are scheduled for retirement, with the first group of 37 animals participating in a farewell parade through the city. To ensure the welfare of the animals, the program includes a responsible adoption scheme overseen by the Defensoría Animalista Laguna. This ensures the retired animals receive proper food and care and are kept away from labor.

During the event, Mayor Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís adopted a donkey named ‘Panchito,’ and Senator Gabriel Elizondo Pérez adopted an animal named ‘Duranguita.’ The program also includes the delivery of motorized units to the workers to ensure they can continue their economic activities without relying on animal traction.
