Torreón Mayor Miguel Ángel Riquelme Tackles Power Outage, Water Debt and Housing Aid
A prolonged power outage struck Torreón's central and western districts on Thursday, shutting down banks, municipal offices, an IMSS daycare and traffic signals, and prompting temporary closures of numerous businesses. The cut began around 14:00 and lasted longer than earlier brief interruptions, raising safety concerns for drivers and pedestrians.
Mayor Miguel Ángel Riquelme Solís launched a low‑cost waterproofing program for residents, offering 15‑liter buckets for 200 pesos each in the Aviación neighbourhood. Over 11,000 buckets have already been distributed, with a target of 18,000 to help families protect their homes during the rainy season.
The municipal administration also entered negotiations with Conagua and CFE to alleviate Simas' financial obligations. Simas owes roughly 218 million pesos to Conagua and more than 440 million pesos to CFE. The talks include possible "peso‑a‑peso" contributions, cancellation of past surcharges for 2025‑2026, and a potential lump‑sum payment to reduce the risk of water supply cuts or well closures.
