Torrent Mayor proposes naming scientist José Antonio Sobrino as Adopted Son

Amparo Folgado, the Mayor of Torrent, has announced a proposal to name scientist José Antonio Sobrino as an 'Adopted Son of the City'. The announcement was made during the opening of the VIII International Symposium on Recent Advances in Quantitative Remote Sensing (RAQRS’VIII) at the Auditori de Torrent.

Sobrino, a professor of Earth Physics at the Universitat de València and founder of the RAQRS series, has maintained a long-standing connection to Torrent. He launched the first edition of the symposium in the city in 2002, establishing it as a venue for researchers from major universities, scientific centers, and space agencies.

The proposal recognizes Sobrino’s scientific career and recent accolades, including the Alejandro Malaspina 2026 National Research Award and the 2019 Rey Jaime I Award for Environmental Protection. The symposium continues until September 25, featuring over 150 scientists from 16 countries.
