Torrent to convert Serra Perenxisa quarry into flood protection basin
The Torrent City Council has approved an urgent project to transform the former Serra Perenxisa quarry into a controlled flooding basin. This infrastructure is designed to mitigate the impact of future torrential rains by diverting water from the l’Horteta ravine into the quarry.
During the extreme weather event (DANA) on October 29, 2024, the quarry acted as an improvised natural reservoir, successfully retaining approximately 2.7 million cubic meters of water. The new project aims to formalize this capacity through technical studies, earthworks to increase storage, and the creation of access paths.
The initial phase involves a contract for technical assistance to draft the project, with a tender budget of 289,167.58 euros, funded by the European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF). This technical stage is part of a larger 10.12 million euro intervention intended to address the consequences of the October floods. The works will also include debris removal, landscape restoration, and revegetation within the Serra Perenxisa Municipal Natural Park.
