Torrent waste tax sparks PP‑PSPV clash

The municipal government of Torrent has launched an information campaign using billboard‑style mupis and QR codes to explain a new waste collection tax. The Partido Popular (PP) argues the tax is a legal obligation under Spain’s Law 7/2022 on waste and contaminated soils, which requires every Spanish municipality to fund waste collection, transport and treatment through a dedicated fee.

The PSPV (Socialist Party of the Valencian Community) has criticised the measure, highlighting that the fee in Torrent can reach €167 and accusing the local council of raising the charge, while pointing to lower rates in other towns such as Mislata (€25). The PP counters that the criticism seeks to portray the tax as a local decision, when it is mandated by national legislation that applies to all municipalities.

Both parties dispute the political narrative, with the PP defending the campaign as purely informational and the PSPV framing it as an undue financial burden on residents.
