Torrevieja hosts lecture series on coastal history and marine biodiversity
The Ars Creatio Cultural Association is conducting its 18th edition of the ‘Torrevieja y el Mar’ lecture series at the Sociedad Cultural Casino de Torrevieja. The program explores the historical and biological connection between the coastal region and the Mediterranean Sea.
Prehistorian Juan Antonio López Padilla presented on the evolution of coastal communities from the Neolithic period through the Bronze Age and the arrival of the Phoenicians. His lecture detailed how maritime activities, such as fishing and seafaring, shaped human settlement and diet over six millennia.
Biologist and oceanographer Julio Más Hernández led the second session, focusing on Mediterranean marine biodiversity. He discussed the cetacean corridor in Spanish waters, highlighting the migratory routes of dolphins, pilot whales, and rorquals. The presentation also addressed conservation challenges for species such as sea turtles and the Mediterranean monk seal, noting potential recovery habitats in the southeastern Spanish coast.
