Torrevieja implements new regulations for community cat colonies

The Torrevieja City Council has introduced a new Ethical Management Program for Feline Colonies to regulate a population of approximately 2,000 cats distributed across 57 colonies and over 200 feeding points.

Under the new regulations, feeding community cats is strictly prohibited outside of officially authorized municipal points. These locations cannot be moved, modified, or expanded without permission from the Animal Protection Department. Food must be placed in containers rather than directly on the ground, and cleaners must ensure the area remains tidy.

The program also aims to prevent the formation of unauthorized colonies. While citizens can report unregistered groups or request the creation of new colonies, the Animal Protection Department must inspect the site and issue a report before any official registration is granted. This initiative follows data showing high numbers of cats entering the municipal shelter with very low microchip identification rates.
