Toruń animal shelter faces crisis due to cat overcapacity

The animal shelter in Toruń, Poland, is currently housing over 350 cats and has suspended new admissions, except for animals requiring urgent veterinary intervention. The facility is facing a critical shortage of space and a heightened risk of infectious disease outbreaks, including panleukopenia, feline flu, FeLV, and FIV.

To alleviate the crisis, the Lubicz Commune has issued an appeal to residents to provide temporary homes for kittens. These temporary placements are intended to last approximately six weeks to allow for necessary quarantine, vaccinations, and deworming. The shelter provides veterinary care and supplies, such as cages, litter boxes, and food, for these temporary caregivers. While permanent adoptions are encouraged to reduce the population, temporary homes are seen as a vital way to ensure the survival and socialization of the animals while they await permanent placement.
