Toshiba to double HDD production capacity for AI data centers

Toshiba Corporation plans to invest approximately ¥60 billion (roughly $380 million) to double its hard disk drive (HDD) production capacity by fiscal year 2027. The expansion is aimed at meeting surging demand for storage in artificial intelligence data centers and nearline storage sectors.

The investment will focus on Toshiba’s manufacturing facility at Laguna Technopark in the Philippines. The company has installed new production lines to manufacture next-generation enterprise drives using microwave-assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) technology. These new lines are designed to increase per-unit storage capacity by up to 40 percent compared to older models.

Toshiba’s roadmap includes launching 30TB-class HDDs in 2027, with goals to reach 65TB models by 2030 and potentially 100TB drives in the future. To support this growth, the company is implementing increased automation in cleanroom operations and inspection procedures, which is expected to improve manufacturing yields and reduce the additional workforce required for the expanded output by 40 percent.
