TotalEnergies commits $10M to Cabo Delgado employment programs
TotalEnergies has committed $10 million to fund employment promotion and income-generation programs in the Palma and Mocímboa da Praia districts of Mozambique's Cabo Delgado province. The initiative is part of a memorandum of understanding signed between the operator of the Mozambique LNG project and the Northern Integrated Development Agency (ADIN).
The funding aims to improve local living conditions and stimulate regional economic activity by supporting sectors such as agriculture, livestock, fisheries, agro-processing, infrastructure development, biodiversity conservation, and cultural promotion. Within the agricultural sector, the program will support cooperatives to enhance production, processing, and market access, with a specific focus on creating jobs for young people.
Additionally, the plan includes the construction and rehabilitation of tertiary roads to improve population mobility and the transport of goods to local markets. Salim Valá, Minister of Planning and Development, noted that the initiative supports economic diversification efforts to reduce community dependence on natural resource extraction. Jacinto Loureiro, President of the ADIN Executive Commission, stated the partnership is designed to create new economic opportunities for local populations.
