TotalEnergies to maintain fuel price caps amid Middle East conflict

TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanné has announced that the company will maintain its voluntary fuel price caps in France as long as the conflict in the Middle East continues. The company is capping gasoline at €1.99 per liter and diesel at €2.25 per liter. Pouyanné noted that this measure has cost the company between €250 million and €300 million, though it has helped increase the group's market share from 22% to 25%.

However, the CEO issued an ultimatum, stating that if the French government implements a tax on energy superprofits, TotalEnergies will immediately end its price-capping program.

Simultaneously, the French government has pledged to extend fuel subsidies for vulnerable sectors, including farmers, fishermen, and transporters, as well as workers who commute long distances. Energy Minister Maud Bregeon confirmed that these sectoral aids will not be suspended, though specific details regarding the duration and scope of the extensions are still being finalized through discussions with industry stakeholders.
