Totnes Castle draped in massive rainbow flag for Pride

A 150-metre rainbow flag was draped over Totnes Castle in Devon as part of the town’s four-day Pride festival. The installation, titled ‘Capture the Castle’, involved 30 local flag bearers and was witnessed by approximately 400 people.

Organisers from Totnes Pride stated the display was intended to show that ‘queer people have always been here and always will be’. They noted that the event had the backing of English Heritage to assist with planning and logistics.

The installation has drawn criticism from some residents and political figures. Opponents argued that the display undermines the 950-year history of the Grade I listed Norman monument. Some critics expressed concerns regarding the use of historic landmarks for ideological statements and questioned whether proper consent was obtained for such a large-scale installation on a protected building.
