Toto Wolff supports return to V8 engines in Formula 1

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has expressed support for FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem’s proposal to reintroduce V8 engines to Formula 1. The potential shift is aimed at the next regulatory cycle, likely around 2030 or 2031, to end the current turbo-hybrid era.

Wolff, describing himself as a “purist,” noted that current engines are highly complex and have fundamentally changed the nature of racing. The proposed transition would involve a greater reliance on the internal combustion engine, potentially with a power output ratio of approximately 80% combustion to 20% battery. The goal is to achieve a 1,000 horsepower output and restore the distinctive sound of the sport.

Wolff indicated he is in discussions with Ben Sulayem, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, and other engine manufacturers regarding these future directions.
