Tottenham Hotspur probes retractable pitch amid injury crisis and vows club reset

Tottenham Hotspur has opened an extensive internal audit to understand why a spate of serious injuries – including multiple ACL tears to James Maddison, Wilson Odobert, Xavi Simons and others – has plagued the squad. The review, led by performance director Dan Lewindon, is testing the “bounce” of the club’s retractable pitch, which uses the same underground tray system as Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, and comparing it with other Premier League surfaces. Early results show no major difference in pitch hardness, but detailed analyses of traction, compaction and player‑specific medical data are ongoing.

Alongside the pitch investigation, the club is overhauling its medical approach: creating bespoke injury‑risk profiles, introducing pod‑based rehabilitation groups and allowing players to use external specialists when agreed. Psychology support will also be expanded with a full‑time head of psychology.

After a 1‑0 win over Everton secured Premier League survival on the final day, CEO Vinai Venkatesham and non‑executive chairman Peter Charrington said Tottenham faces a “complete reset”. They described the back‑to‑back 17th‑place finishes as unacceptable and warned that the upcoming summer transfer window is “critical” for rebuilding the squad, improving the training‑centre facilities and restoring fan confidence.
