Sandro Tonali at the centre of Tottenham's £86 million bid and Newcastle's replacement hunt

Tottenham Hotspur have tabled a six‑year £86 million offer for Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali, but the Magpies are demanding more than £100 million, a price that would set a club record if met. The Italian international, who joined Newcastle for £55 million from AC Milan in 2023, is also linked with Arsenal and Manchester City, while Tottenham have simultaneously pursued other midfield targets, notably Mateus Fernandes and have decided against a permanent deal for Joao Palhinha to free up funds.

Newcastle, anticipating Tonali’s possible exit, are scouting potential replacements. Reports cite Swiss‑born World Cup striker Johan Manzambi as a candidate, along with German midfielder Felix Nmecha and other players matching a specific profile of progressive passing and defensive work. The club’s strategy reflects a desire to maintain midfield quality while securing a substantial transfer fee.

Separately, Tottenham have outlined a pre‑season programme that includes back‑to‑back friendlies against Bundesliga side Hoffenheim on 15 and 16 August, as well as matches in New Zealand and Australia against Auckland FC, Sydney FC and Chelsea. The fixtures aim to ready the squad, many of whom are returning from the 2026 World Cup, for the upcoming Premier League season.
