Tottenham signs Mateus Fernandes from West Ham for £85 million

Tottenham Hotspur announced the signing of 21‑year‑old Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes from West Ham United for a reported fee of £85 million, the highest transfer fee in the club’s history.

Fernandes previously played for Southampton before joining West Ham, making 36 appearances for each club and earning his senior Portugal debut in April 2024. Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi said the player “combines quality, intensity and intelligence” and fits the team’s playing style. Fernandes expressed excitement to join a “big club” and highlighted De Zerbi’s influence on his decision.

Former West Ham midfielder Don Hutchison commented on the deal, acknowledging that selling a player to a rival is painful but noting that the £85 million fee allows West Ham “to sell one player to keep four or five,” urging fans to keep perspective.
