Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange defends transfer strategy

Tottenham sporting director Johan Lange has addressed recent criticism regarding the club’s performance and transfer spending. Despite the club facing a difficult period that included flirting with relegation, Lange stated he never feared for his position, noting that the club’s leadership and owners remained confident in the long-term strategy.

Lange commented on the evolving nature of the football transfer market, suggesting that the era of finding undervalued talent in obscure leagues is largely over. He noted that because scouting networks have become so advanced globally, clubs are now competing for a limited pool of high-quality players, which drives up prices.

Following a turbulent period, Tottenham invested over £300m this summer to overhaul the squad, signing eight first-team players including Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio, and Jan Paul van Hecke. Lange maintained that the club did not overpay for these targets, asserting that the costs are consistent with what competitors pay for similar talent.
