Tottenham Spurs spend £185 million on midfield signings Fernandes and Tonali
Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the £85 million acquisition of Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The club is also in advanced talks to bring Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United for a reported £92.5 million plus £7.5 million in performance‑related bonuses. If completed, the two deals would total roughly £185 million, the largest summer outlay for the Spurs on midfielders. The signings are described as a move to overhaul a midfield that under‑performed in the 2023‑24 season, aiming to provide greater control, intensity and leadership after a campaign that left the team just above the relegation zone. Tottenham hopes the new arrivals will help the club regain competitiveness in the Premier League and European competitions.
