Toucans: Characteristics and ecological roles of Ramphastidae

Toucans, members of the Ramphastidae family, are iconic tropical birds found from southern Mexico to South America, including Brazilian biomes such as the Amazon, Atlantic Forest, and Cerrado. There are more than 40 species of toucans and aracaris.

Their large, colorful beaks are lightweight due to a bone-foam-like internal structure covered in keratin. This beak serves multiple purposes: it acts as a thermal regulator by managing blood flow to dissipate or conserve heat, assists in reaching food, manipulates objects, and is used in social hierarchies and defense. Additionally, toucans play a vital ecological role as seed dispersers, helping to regenerate natural forests by depositing seeds in new locations.
