Toulon violence: authorities report heavy toll after unrest
Authorities in Toulon have reported a heavy toll following violent demonstrations on Saturday, October 17, 2026. Prefect of Var, Simon Babre, described the events as a “déchaînement de violence rarement atteint” (outburst of violence rarely reached) in the city.
The unrest, which involved approximately 4,000 people, reportedly escalated when mobile groups joined the procession to target public equipment and local businesses. The consequences include 20 arrests, injuries to 17 police officers and two gendarmes, and damage to at least ten shops.
During a press conference, local leaders including Mayor Josée Massi, Regional President François de Canson, and National Police Director Jérôme Martin discussed the difficulties of maintaining order and the measures being considered to support affected merchants.
