Toulouse weighs Garonne river swimming as heatwave drives demand for cooling spots

The Toulouse city council is reassessing the long‑term feasibility of allowing public swimming in the Garonne River as recurring heatwaves push residents to seek natural cooling options. Municipal studies highlight safety, water‑quality and infrastructure challenges that must be addressed before any river bathing sites could be authorized.

Meanwhile, swimming remains prohibited in the Garonne, and the city has promoted a network of nearby beaches, lakes and temporary water‑play areas. Free sites such as Toulouse Plages on the prairie des Filtres, the supervised beach at La Ramée, Muret Plage on the Lac des Bonnets, the lake of L’Orme Blanc at Caraman, and the Lac de la Thésauque near Montgeard offer monitored bathing and recreational facilities through late August, providing immediate relief for the public during the summer heat.
