Tour de France 2026: Clément Berthet injured in early crash as leaders emerge

During the opening team time trial of the 2026 Tour de France, Groupama‑FDJ rider Clément Berthet suffered a serious fall after hitting a manhole cover. The crash left him heavily injured and unable to continue the race. Team director Anthony Bouillod said Berthet "lost his balance" and was taken away for medical attention. Fellow French rider Guillaume Martin also fell but escaped serious injury. The Astana team experienced multiple falls as well, with three riders examined but no fractures detected.

Meanwhile, the race’s classifications have taken shape. Slovenian Tadej Pogačar leads the general classification, followed by Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel. Pogačar also tops the points (green) jersey. In the mountains competition Alex Baudin leads, while Isaac del Toro holds the white jersey for best young rider. The team classification is headed by UAE Emirates‑XRG. These standings set the early narrative for the three‑week event in France.
