During the night before the 15th stage of the 2026 Tour de France, the two race leaders – Slovenia’s Tadej Pogacar and Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard – were subjected to surprise anti‑doping controls. Vingegaard was awoken at about 02:00 h, while Pogacar’s test came at 05:00 h, leaving him with only four hours of sleep. Both riders described the experience as disruptive; Vingegaard called it “a lack of respect” and Pogacar said he could not fall back asleep, spending the morning drinking coffee and listening to music. The tests are permitted under UCI rule Article 5.2.2, which allows sampling at any time unless a rider has set a 60‑minute testing window. The controversy heightened concerns about recovery before the demanding 183.9‑km mountain stage from Champagnole to the Plateau de Solaison, featuring four categorized climbs and an especially steep final ascent. Media coverage also noted Pogacar’s recent stage win, his lead in the general classification, and speculation about his participation in the upcoming Vuelta a España.
