Tour de France Femmes faces prize money and coverage criticism
The Tour de France Femmes faces scrutiny regarding a significant prize money disparity compared to the men's race. The 2026 winner of the men's Tour is set to receive €500,000, while the women's winner will receive €50,000. This tenfold difference extends across various categories, including stage wins and secondary classifications.
While the men's race covers approximately 3,320 km over 21 stages, the women's race spans roughly 1,175 km over nine stages. Despite the shorter duration, critics argue the economic gap remains disproportionate. In contrast, virtual cycling competitions like the MyWhoosh Championships have distributed prize pools exceeding $1 million.
Additionally, the Tour de France Femmes director, Marion Rousse, has faced criticism regarding media coverage, as only three of the nine stages are slated for full television broadcast. While organizers have signaled a willingness to consider expanding TV airtime, discussions continue regarding the long-term development and duration of the women's race.
