Tour de Rock cycling team nears Vancouver Island finish
The 22-person Tour de Rock cycling team is nearing the conclusion of a 14-day journey across Vancouver Island. Having departed from Port Alice on September 20, the group has traveled over 910 kilometres, recently summiting the Malahat to enter the Greater Victoria area.
The expedition has raised $425,000 to support pediatric cancer research. Participants include community riders like Ashka Wirk, who joined the tour to support honorary rider Olivia Lassam, a 14-year-old who has been battling cancer for much of her life.
Other riders, such as 65-year-old Arthur van Deth, have highlighted the emotional and team-oriented nature of the long-distance trek, which includes significant climbs and daily distances reaching up to 140 kilometres.
