Tourism activities suspended at Pico de Orizaba due to violent robberies

Travel agencies, hiking groups, and ecotourism operators in Puebla and Veracruz have announced a total suspension of expeditions to Pico de Orizaba National Park for October and November. The decision follows an alarming increase in violent robberies targeting mountain tourists.

Reports indicate that armed individuals are intercepting groups on dirt roads leading to Valle del Encuentro, Sierra Negra, and Refugio de la Cara Sur, particularly near Atzizintla, Puebla. Criminal methods include the use of “ponchallantas” (tire-puncturing devices) to force vehicles to stop, followed by robberies involving high-powered weapons. Victims have reported the theft of cash, personal belongings, vehicles, and expensive mountaineering equipment.

Operators stated that they are prioritizing human life over economic gain, as current security conditions are insufficient. The suspension represents a significant economic blow to the region, as this period is typically part of the high season for high-mountain tourism.
