Tourism and commerce trends show divergence in Catalonia
Tourism and commercial trends in Catalonia show mixed results this summer. In Olot and the Garrotxa region, visitor numbers have increased slightly compared to last year. The primary visitor profiles are families and couples, with a notable rise in domestic tourism from regions such as Madrid and the Basque Country, while international tourism has seen a decline. Visitors have focused on nature and culture, including sites like Montsacopa volcano and Fageda d’en Jordà. However, heatwaves have caused some last-minute cancellations as travelers seek cooler destinations.
In contrast, the business association Barcelona Oberta has reported a generalized decrease in both visitors and sales across Barcelona’s main commercial axes compared to the previous year. The organization attributes this downturn to mobility difficulties and extensive urban construction projects. Major works affecting key corridors—including Plaça d’Espanya, Gran Via, Meridiana, and the Ronda de Dalt—have created a chain effect, making it difficult for consumers to access various neighborhoods and commercial zones. Barcelona Oberta is calling for improved mobility planning starting in September to support the autumn commercial season.
