FestMat 2026: National Mathematics Festival begins in Rio de Janeiro

The fourth edition of the National Mathematics Festival (FestMat 2026) has commenced at Aterro do Flamengo in Rio de Janeiro. Organized by the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics (Impa), the event runs until Sunday, May 30.

Using a pop-culture theme titled ‘Mathematics is Pop – Discover the Worlds of Mathematics,’ the festival utilizes comic book aesthetics to make exact sciences more accessible. The event is divided into six thematic spaces covering areas such as geometry, arithmetic, and dynamics.

Activities include interactive games, scientific demonstrations like a wind tunnel from the Fluid Dynamics Laboratory (No Fluid), and educational initiatives such as the ‘Meninas Olímpicas do Impa’ (MOI) project, which promotes female participation in STEM. While the first two days are reserved for scheduled school visits, the festival opens to the general public on Saturday and Sunday via free ticket reservations.
