Panama Canal reduces vessel transits due to El Niño drought
The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is implementing further restrictions on vessel transits due to a severe drought linked to the El Niño phenomenon. Following previous reductions in August and early September, daily transits have been lowered to 32 vessels.
For the upcoming fiscal year beginning in October, the ACP projects an average of 29.5 daily transits. In a worst-case scenario, daily crossings could potentially drop as low as 27. The drought has significantly lowered water levels in the Gatun and Alhajuela lakes, which are essential for operating the canal's lock system.
The situation is exacerbated by forecasts suggesting the current El Niño could be one of the strongest recorded. These hydrological challenges threaten a vital artery for global trade, which handles approximately 5% of the world's maritime commerce.
