Tourism drives economic growth in France's Lot department

The Lot department in France is experiencing significant economic activity driven by major tourist sites. In Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, one of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages of France,’ local authorities have implemented a flat-rate parking fee of 7 euros for several lots. While the mayor, Frédéric Decremps, notes that a full visit typically requires several hours, the fixed rate has caused some friction among visitors and locals. The village attracts approximately 600,000 visitors annually.

Nearby, the Gouffre de Padirac serves as a massive economic engine for the Dordogne Valley. The site, featuring a 75-meter deep sinkhole and 40 km of underground rivers, attracts nearly 500,000 visitors each year. This tourism generates over 20 million euros in economic benefits for the region and supports roughly 350 direct and indirect jobs, which is double the population of Padirac itself. Local businesses, including restaurants, campsites, and hotels, rely heavily on the influx of travelers drawn to both the sinkhole and the nearby medieval village of Rocamadour.
