Tabarca island recognized for beauty and marine conservation

The Spanish island of Tabarca, located off the coast of Alicante, is celebrating two major milestones. National Geographic has named the island among Spain’s 25 most beautiful beaches for 2026, citing its clear Mediterranean waters and the Posidonia oceanica meadows that support a rich marine ecosystem.

Additionally, 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of the waters surrounding Tabarca being designated as Spain’s first marine fishing reserve. Established in 1986, the reserve covers 1,754 hectares and serves as a national model for balancing marine conservation with sustainable traditional fishing practices.

The island holds significant historical value, having been fortified in the 18th century by King Carlos III to house Genovese fishing families. Its historic center, including its walls and church, was recognized as a Historic-Artistic Site in 1964.
