Italy's maritime traffic hits 100 million passengers in 2025

Italian ports recorded a total of 100 million maritime passengers in 2025, a 2.1 % rise on the previous year and cementing Italy’s lead in Mediterranean sea travel. The surge includes cruise ships, ferries, catamarans and water‑taxis, with domestic demand accounting for 54 % of the traffic and foreign visitors – notably from Germany, the United States and France – making up the remainder.

National tourism figures also show strong growth. In 2025 Italy welcomed 138.4 million arrivals and 476.9 million total presences, ranking fourth in Europe for arrivals and second for presences. Foreign visitors contributed 56 % of all stays, while hotel occupancy rose 1.4 % and average length of stay reached 3.1 nights. Spending patterns shifted, with international tourists spending €56.7 billion, of which €13 billion went to restaurants – a sector that now outpaces retail shopping.

Regional data underline the trend: Veneto’s Vicenza province logged 2.36 million stays, up 1.6 %; Treviso province recorded 900 000 stays, a 6.2 % increase; and tourism‑related artisan firms in Treviso engaged over 10 000 workers, though average spend per visitor fell from €48 to €44.
