Tourism in Yogyakarta and Sleman faces economic and operational challenges

Tourism in Yogyakarta and Sleman faces both opportunities for local economic growth and significant operational hurdles. Discussions held by the Yogyakarta Regional House of Representatives (DPRD DIY) emphasized that rising tourist numbers must translate into direct economic benefits for local residents, particularly through job creation and support for small businesses.

In Sleman, the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI) reported challenges in increasing hotel occupancy and visitor numbers. Key obstacles include government budget efficiency measures that have reduced official travel and MICE (meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions) activities. Additionally, the region faces a shortage of large-scale venues for major events and needs to improve investment openness to attract foreign interest in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
