Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni visits Matala, Crete

Greek Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni visited Matala in southern Crete, highlighting the area's historical and cultural significance. Kefalogianni, who is originally from Crete, shared images of the region's iconic rock-cut caves, which are widely considered to be Roman or early Christian tombs.

The Minister noted that Matala serves as a unique intersection of history, ranging from the Minoan and Roman eras to its fame as a destination for hippie culture during the 1960s and 1970s. She emphasized that the landscape combines ancient heritage with a sense of freedom and simplicity.

The Ministry of Tourism is actively supporting the Municipality of Phaistos in promoting the region. This includes support for the Matala Beach Festival, a free annual event held every June to increase the area's international visibility.
