Tourism sector faces diverse challenges across Spain and Argentina
The tourism industry is navigating significant structural and economic hurdles across several regions. In Spain, hotel operators in Ibiza and Formentera report that 82% of businesses face difficulties recruiting and retaining staff due to a lack of affordable housing. Meanwhile, the Rías Baixas region in Galicia is seeing a shift toward a global model, with international visitors now accounting for nearly half of all tourists.
In Argentina, the sector is grappling with rising operational costs and economic instability. In Mar del Plata, hotel owners report the closure of 64 hotels over the last three years, with small establishments being the most affected. Meliá Hotels International CEO Gabriel Escarrer noted that while international travel to Argentina is affordable, the high cost of domestic flights remains a major barrier to developing high-end regional tourism circuits.
Other regional reports highlight localized issues, such as the need for increased financing and promotional campaigns in Catamarca, and the impact of flooding on tourism in Entre Ríos. Additionally, travel agencies in Córdoba are preparing for high demand expected from a papal visit, despite concerns regarding weather patterns and consumer caution.
