Tourism sectors in La Guaira and Tecozautla seek economic recovery
In La Guaira, Venezuela, beach resorts are reopening four months after a double earthquake that resulted in over 5,000 deaths. Local business leaders, including Eneida Agüero of Bahía Marina, noted that while visitor numbers have been slow due to concerns regarding road conditions, approximately 80% of the region's beaches are ready for operation. Local residents and visitors from Caracas have begun returning to support the commerce and tourism industries that many depend on for survival.
In Tecozautla, Mexico, the closure of the El Géiser tourist site for over a month has impacted the local economy. Business leaders from the Association of Spas and Water Parks of Ixmiquilpan are calling for government investment to address geological issues preventing the site from reopening. The closure, reportedly linked to a decrease in water and steam flow following seismic activity in the Pacific, affects over 20 hotels and more than 1,000 jobs. Local entrepreneurs noted that they have previously had to manage natural disasters, such as the 2021 Tula River floods, without government assistance.
