Tourism trends show declines in Peru and Morocco

In Peru, the number of foreign visitors decreased by 5.5% in the second quarter of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, according to the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics. Chilean nationals represented the largest group of visitors at 31.9%, followed by citizens from the United States (14.3%), Ecuador (8.9%), and Colombia (8.8%). Jorge Chávez International Airport in Lima remained the primary entry point, receiving 667,666 foreign visitors.

Despite the decline in visitor numbers, revenue from foreign tourists has grown, rising from $4.7 billion in 2019 to $5.3 billion in 2025. The tourism sector is expected to contribute 3.7% to Peru's GDP in 2026.

In Morocco, a recent study indicates that 74% of Moroccans chose to stay home during the 2026 summer season, with 56% of non-travelers citing financial reasons for their decision. Among those who did travel, 91% opted for domestic tourism. While the average duration of stays decreased from 13 days in 2025 to 11 days in 2026, the average holiday budget rose from 8,400 dirhams to 9,800 dirhams.
