Regional tourism trends show record growth in Slovenia and debates in Split
Tourism sectors across Southeast Europe and Austria are reporting varied results for the recent summer season. In Slovenia, August saw record-breaking numbers with nearly 1.3 million arrivals and over 3.5 million overnight stays, a 6% increase compared to the previous year. Foreign tourists accounted for 83% of these stays, with Germany being the primary source market.
In Croatia, the city of Split is facing internal debate regarding its Destination Management Plan for 2026–2029. The plan proposes increasing the share of hotels and campsites to 30%, which has met resistance from private landlords. The association ‘Let’s Save Small Family Landlords’ (SMOi) argues the plan unfairly targets private accommodation, noting that household facilities currently provide significantly more beds than hotels.
In Montenegro, hospitality providers in Herceg Novi reported revenue growth between 10% and 30% compared to last year, though they noted challenges such as labor shortages and lower consumer spending. Meanwhile, in Austria, Vienna recorded approximately 1.9 million overnight stays in August, a slight decrease of 0.2% from the previous year, despite a 4% increase in total overnight stays since the beginning of 2026.
