Tourist dies after boat collision in Santa Marta
A 58-year-old tourist, José Arbey Díaz Alzate, died after being struck by a boat while snorkeling in the Cabo Tortuga sector of Santa Marta, Colombia. The incident occurred on Sunday, October 25.
According to the Maritime Directorate (Dimar), the victim was hit by a vessel towing an inflatable float, commonly known as a “gusano.” Preliminary reports suggest the impact happened as the boat was moving away from the coast.
Díaz Alzate, a resident of Candelaria, Valle del Cauca, was evacuated by the boat to the El Rodadero Sur sector and subsequently transported to the Avidanti clinic, where he was pronounced dead.
The Port Captaincy of Santa Marta has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the accident. Authorities are currently reviewing the documentation, permits, and safety conditions of the vessels involved to establish responsibility.
