Tourist rescued from Tocantins cliff after selfie accident
A 50-year-old tourist was rescued after spending approximately 12 to 16 hours trapped on a cliffside in the Serra de Taguatinga, Tocantins. The man, a resident of the Distrito Federal, lost his balance while attempting to take selfies and photos of the landscape, resulting in him becoming stuck in a narrow, difficult-to-access area near a precipice with a drop of over 70 meters.
The victim managed to use his mobile phone to contact authorities and share his exact location. The rescue operation, conducted by the Tocantins Military Fire Department (CBMTO), required navigating dense vegetation and using rappelling techniques to reach the man. The victim reported experiencing intense heat and thirst during the ordeal but sustained only minor abrasions.
Following the successful extraction, the man was transported by ambulance to the Municipal Hospital São João Batista in Taguatinga for medical evaluation. Firefighters have used the incident to warn against the dangers of taking photographs in high-risk areas without proper preparation or accompaniment.
