Tourist surge causes severe traffic jams on Croatia's A1 highway

With the start of the main summer season, Croatia's roads are experiencing heavy congestion, especially on the A1 motorway that links Zagreb with the Adriatic coast. The Croatian Auto Club (HAK) warns drivers to expect significantly longer travel times and queues at major toll plazas and tunnels, with the busiest stretches between Zagreb and Bosiljevo and around the capital itself.

Traffic peaks are also reported at the Lučko and Demerje toll gates and on the Krk Bridge. HAK advises motorists to travel outside peak hours, keep safe distances, carry sufficient water, and take regular breaks to avoid engine overheating and driver fatigue. Weekend traffic especially builds up between Karlovac and Bosiljevo and near Zagreb, turning sections of the highway into slow‑moving queues.
