Lens: 15-year-old student loses hand during French student protests

A 15-year-old student was severely injured in Lens, France, after losing a hand during student protests. The incident occurred near the Auguste-Béhal vocational high school. While a police union source suggests the teenager may have picked up a sting-ball grenade thrown by riot police with the intent to throw it back, the prosecutor in Béthune, Étienne Thieffry, stated that investigators have not yet determined if the student picked up the device or if it fell on him.

The injury occurred amidst nationwide student demonstrations that have entered their third week. Protesters are demanding better resources, addressing issues such as teacher shortages, overcrowded classrooms, and dilapidated school infrastructure. The government has reported that 24 schools have been vandalized or set on fire, and Minister of Education Édouard Geffray noted that at least 190 students have been injured since the movement began.

The Inspectorate General of the National Police (IGPN) has opened an investigation into the incident, specifically looking into potential violence resulting in permanent mutilation. The Auguste-Béhal high school has temporarily switched to remote learning and established psychological support for its community. The unrest comes months before the 2027 presidential elections.
