Tower Hamlets Council spends £2.3m on South Dock Bridge project

Tower Hamlets Council has spent over £2.3 million on consulting fees for the proposed South Dock Bridge, a pedestrian crossing intended to link Canary Wharf with the Isle of Dogs and South Quay. Despite the project being slated for completion in 2024, the council has admitted there is currently no start date for construction because estimated costs have risen to £25 million.

Former councillor Andrew Wood noted that this represents the fourth attempt to build a bridge in the area. He highlighted that developers have paid Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) fees specifically to fund such infrastructure, and residents have paid premiums for apartments based on the promise of improved connectivity. Wood suggested that the lack of progress has contributed to a slowdown in development on the Isle of Dogs.
