Tower Hamlets residents face prolonged water shortages

Hundreds of residents in nine blocks of flats in the Tower Hamlets area of east London have been facing irregular running water for over seven months. The shortages, which began last summer and intensified in December, have forced families to rely on bottled water for cooking, cleaning, and hygiene.

Local MP Uma Kumaran has criticized the housing association Poplar Harca, describing the situation as a failure to meet fundamental duties to tenants. While residents suspect that nearby new housing developments have strained the local infrastructure, Poplar Harca has denied that the water supply has ever stopped completely, though it acknowledged that pressure levels can fluctuate.

The housing association previously attributed the issue to Thames Water providing lower flow pressures. However, Poplar Harca also indicated that extensive works, including the creation of a new pump room, are required to increase pressure. These repairs have been delayed pending a Section 20 formal process to determine cost-sharing responsibilities with leaseholders.
