Town of Newburgh Detective Christopher Thompson passes away at 35

The Town of Newburgh Police Department is mourning the death of Detective Christopher Thompson, who passed away on August 8, 2026, at the age of 35. A specific cause of death has not been released.

Thompson joined the Town of Newburgh Police Department in April 2017, following previous service with the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Town of Wallkill Police Department. During his career, he held various roles, including Patrol Division officer, K-9 Handler, Firearms Instructor, General Topics Instructor, and Team Leader on the Tactical Unit. He most recently served as an Investigator in the Detective Bureau.

Funeral arrangements have been set at the Cronomer Valley Fire House in Newburgh. A wake will be held on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., followed by a funeral service on Thursday at 10 a.m. In recognition of his work as a K-9 Handler, a K-9 lineup will take place during the funeral service. The department has invited law enforcement, first responders, and the public to attend the services to honor his life and service.
