Toxic Algae Blooms Threaten Minnesota Lakes and Pets

Hot, calm summer weather in Minnesota is prompting thick green algae blooms on lakes, fueled by high phosphorus levels from fertilizer runoff and yard waste. The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency warns that many of these blooms are toxic and can cause mild symptoms in humans such as rashes, diarrhea, and vomiting, while posing a serious risk to pets, especially dogs, which have suffered vomiting, seizures, liver failure, and even death after exposure.

The agency advises residents to avoid contact with the scums, keep pets away from affected waters, and seek veterinary care promptly if symptoms appear. Resources such as the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center hotline are provided for emergency guidance.
