Toxic blue-green algae detected in Canada and the UK
Authorities in Canada and the United Kingdom have issued warnings regarding the presence of potentially toxic blue-green algae in local waterways.
In Canada, the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks confirmed blue-green algae in a water sample from Hattie Cove within Pukaskwa National Park near Marathon. Visitors are advised to avoid swimming in, drinking, or using the water for household purposes. Pet owners are specifically cautioned to keep animals away from the water due to their vulnerability to ingestion. Experts note that warmer water temperatures linked to climate change may increase the frequency of such blooms.
In the United Kingdom, the Environment Agency has confirmed the presence of toxic blue-green algae in the River Thames near Kingston’s designated bathing area. Swimmers, paddle boarders, and pet owners are advised to stay out of the water until further notice. The affected area is part of a recently designated official swimming zone in London intended to encourage river use and cleanliness.
