Toxic chemicals found in black plastic kitchen utensils
A study published in the journal Chemosphere by the research organization Toxic-Free Future has raised alarms regarding toxic substances found in black plastic kitchen utensils and food containers.
The contamination stems from the source of the raw material: much of the black plastic used in these products is recycled from electronic waste, such as television casings and computer housings. To meet electrical safety standards, these electronics are treated with brominated flame retardants. When recycled without adequate controls, these chemicals are molded into everyday items like spatulas, spoons, and food containers.
Scientists and medical professionals warn that the risk increases during cooking. When black plastic utensils come into contact with heat, boiling water, or fats, the temperature accelerates material degradation, facilitating the migration of these hazardous chemicals into food.
